Narmada Hulangamuwa

I am a contemporary artist based in Melbourne, Australia, working primarily in oil on canvas.

I have loved painting for as long as I can remember. I started drawing and painting when I was around four or five and continued throughout my school years. Life eventually took me in a different direction. I went on to raise my family and build a career in IT, continuing to paint whenever I could. Now that my children are older, I have more time to return to painting more seriously. It has become a welcomed balance to my working life, giving me a chance to slow down, unwind and spend time doing something I have always loved.

Painting was never something I truly left behind. Many of my paintings found their way onto the walls of our home, making it feel more personal, warm and beautiful. Over the years, painting has also given me a sense of calm and a space to pause, reflect and simply be.

I am drawn to places, memories and experiences that stay with me. My paintings grow from these impressions, shaped by colour, light and imagination. Sometimes I begin with a place or a memory; other times, I let my imagination guide me. I enjoy seeing where a painting takes me, allowing it to develop into something beyond the original idea.

I work with layered colour and textured brushwork, building depth, movement and detail as a painting develops. My work moves between recognisable landscapes and more expressive, abstract elements. I particularly enjoy creating paintings that reveal more when viewed closely, inviting people to take their time and discover details they might not notice at first.

For me, painting is about more than what we see. It is about the feelings a place, a memory or even a particular combination of colours can bring back or create. I hope my paintings bring a sense of beauty and joy into people's lives and become something they continue to enjoy living with over time.

Since returning to painting seriously in 2025, I have been enjoying the opportunity to give more time to something that has been part of my life since childhood. I look forward to continuing to develop my work, following new ideas and discovering where my painting takes me.
